The Closest Casino to Every State Capital, Measured
A reference table nobody else has bothered to compute: how far you would drive from each state capitol to place a legal bet.
Every state capital is a seat of gambling law. Some of them are a short walk from a casino floor. Several are a day's driving.
We measured all of them.
Distances from state capitol buildings to the nearest casino, computed from coordinates across 462 US properties. Montgomery, Alabama is 13 miles from Wind Creek Wetumpka. Honolulu is 2,389 miles from anything. The recurring pattern is the state line: for a large share of capitals, the nearest casino is in a neighbouring state, which tells you more about American gambling politics than any policy document.
The furthest
Five of those nine require leaving the state. Boise's nearest casino is in Nevada; Nashville's is in Indiana; Cheyenne's is in Colorado; Atlanta's is in North Carolina; Richmond's is in Maryland.
The border effect, stated plainly
Casinos cluster at legal boundaries. Not near population centres — near the edge of the jurisdiction that permits them, facing the population that prohibits them.
West Wendover, Nevada exists to serve Salt Lake City. Cactus Petes in Jackpot sits a few miles from the Idaho line. Wind Creek Wetumpka is close enough to Montgomery to be a weeknight trip.
How to use this
If you are working out whether a casino trip is realistic from where you live, the capital figure is a reasonable proxy for your state — but only a proxy. A capital in one corner of a state can be far from a casino while a city in the other corner is close.
For an actual answer, our metro pages measure from major cities directly, and the airport pages measure from terminals if you are flying.
Where the standard advice is wrong
You will read that gambling is now available to almost every American. As a statement about state law that is nearly true — the large majority of states permit some form of casino gaming.
As a statement about access it misleads badly. Legal availability somewhere in your state and a casino within a sensible drive are different things, and the table above is full of capitals where they diverge by a hundred miles or more. "Your state has casinos" and "you can get to one after work" are not the same claim, and only one of them describes a trip.
