Germany's Spielbanks — A Tour of the State Casinos
Germany's casinos are mostly state-operated 'Spielbanks' — and the historic ones (Baden-Baden, Wiesbaden, Bad Homburg) are some of Europe's finest.
Germany licenses 65+ casinos, almost all operated by state ("Land") governments under the brand Spielbank. The famous historic ones — Baden-Baden, Wiesbaden, Bad Homburg — are Belle Époque palaces older than Monte Carlo. Modern flagships in Berlin, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Köln. Tables €5–10 mass-floor; 3:2 blackjack; single-zero roulette. Photo ID required at entry across all Spielbanks.
Baden-Baden — the original Monte Carlo
Opened 1809; the Casino Baden-Baden's "rooms" inspired the design of Monte Carlo half a century later. Marlene Dietrich called it "the most beautiful casino in the world." Salle Pompadour, Salle Rouge, Salle Florentine — each themed in different French period style.
Tables run €5 mass-floor in the smaller rooms, €25+ in the historic salons. Jacket required after 8pm in the historic rooms.
Best paired with a spa weekend — the town is Germany's most famous spa destination.
Wiesbaden
Casino Wiesbaden inside the Kurhaus (1907). Dostoyevsky played here and lost his shirt — the experience inspired "The Gambler." Smaller than Baden-Baden but architecturally just as fine. Tables €5+ mass-floor.
Bad Homburg
The original Casino Bad Homburg (1841) was the model that François Blanc later replicated at Monte Carlo. Closed during the Nazi era and reopened post-war. Smaller and quieter than Baden-Baden; worth a visit if you're in Frankfurt.

Rules and what to play
German blackjack is favorable — 3:2 standard, double after split, six-deck shoes. House edge ~0.5%. Single-zero roulette is the universal standard.
The signature German game is Black Jack with splitting any two equal-value cards (10s with 10s, etc.) — slightly more lenient than US standard.
Slots in Spielbanks are heavily regulated; expect lower volatility and lower hit rates than US casinos.
