In 60 seconds

Indiana has 13 commercial casinos generating $2.6B annually — 4th in US commercial gaming revenue. Top properties: Horseshoe Hammond (Caesars, on Lake Michigan, capturing Chicago players), Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana (Gary, opened 2021), Belterra Casino Resort, Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg. The state's 2019 legalization of full table games (replacing the older "riverboat" technicality) accelerated growth. Online sports betting added 2019.

Why Indiana grew so big

Three factors:

  1. Geography. Indiana borders Illinois (Chicago), Ohio (Cincinnati), Kentucky (Louisville), and Michigan. Each border captures cross-state traffic.
  1. 2019 legislation. Indiana legalized full table games in 2019 (eliminating the older riverboat-technicality), legalized sports betting, and authorized online sports betting. The combination drove revenue growth.
  1. Caesars / Penn / Boyd presence. All three major regional operators have Indiana properties. The competition has driven property quality and comp programs.

Indiana proves that a Midwest state with 6.8M residents and competitive operators can build a $2.6B casino market. Most non-residents don't know it exists. The Indiana operators don't need them to — local + cross-border traffic is enough.
