Keno Is the Worst Bet on the Floor. People Play It Anyway — and That's the Interesting Part

No game in the casino takes a bigger cut. Keno's survival is not a failure of player education — it is a different product entirely.

In the corner of the coffee shop there is a card, a crayon and a board of numbers. Nobody is watching it intently. Somebody fills in eight numbers, hands it over, and goes back to their eggs.

That is keno, and by the numbers it is the worst bet in the building by a distance.

In 60 seconds

Keno's house edge typically runs somewhere in the 20 to 30 percent range, against roughly 0.5% for well-played blackjack and 5.26% for double-zero roulette. It is not close. But keno is not competing with blackjack — it is competing with doing nothing while you eat breakfast, and on that comparison it wins easily. That is worth understanding, because it is how a lot of casino products actually work.

The scale of the edge

Put concretely: a dollar wagered on blackjack played correctly has an expected cost of about half a cent. A dollar on keno has an expected cost of roughly twenty-five cents.

You would have to play blackjack for fifty hands to give up what one keno ticket costs you in expectation. There is no configuration of numbers, no pattern, no ticket type that meaningfully changes this — the edge is built into the pay table, and the pay tables are broadly similar wherever you find them.

So why does it exist

Because keno is not sold as a bet. It is sold as ambient participation.

The game is slow — one draw every several minutes — which means the cost per hour is low even though the cost per dollar is enormous. A player risking $1 a game for an hour has risked perhaps $15 and expects to lose around $4. In per-hour terms that is cheaper than a lot of slot play.

Keno has the worst odds and one of the lowest hourly costs in the building. Both are true, and the second is why it survives.

That combination — terrible per-wager maths, gentle per-hour maths — is a genuinely distinct product. It is closer to a lottery ticket than to a casino game, and lottery tickets sell fine with far worse odds than keno.

The video version is a different animal

Video keno deserves a separate warning, because it removes the one thing that made the paper game defensible.

A video keno machine draws every few seconds rather than every few minutes. The edge is comparable, but the decision rate is a hundred times higher — so the hourly cost stops being gentle and becomes among the steepest on the floor.

Where the standard advice is wrong

"Never play keno" is correct as arithmetic and useless as advice, because it argues with a decision nobody was making on arithmetic grounds.

Someone marking a keno card over breakfast is not choosing between keno and optimal blackjack. They are choosing between a small ongoing amusement and staring at the wall. Told that the edge is 25%, most will keep playing, because the number was never the point.

The honest guidance is narrower and more likely to land: play the paper game, not the video one; treat the ticket as an entertainment purchase with no expectation of return; and never let a keno budget wander upward, because the edge that is tolerable at a dollar becomes brutal at ten.
