LA to Las Vegas Drive — Casino Pit Stops Worth Making

Driving from LA to Vegas? The state-line casinos at Primm aren't just rest stops — they're a strange piece of casino history.

In 60 seconds

The 270-mile LA-to-Vegas drive (4-5 hours typical) passes through Primm, Nevada — three connected casinos at the state line: Buffalo Bill's, Whiskey Pete's, Primm Valley. Once-thriving, now half-shuttered. Buffalo Bill's hosts a roller coaster. Worth a 30-minute stop for the curiosity, not for the gambling. Stateline, NV (next to South Lake Tahoe) is unrelated and named confusingly.

01

The Primm story

Primm sits on I-15 at the California-Nevada border. The casinos opened over the 1970s-1990s as catchers for Californians driving to Vegas — gamble before Vegas, gamble before going home.

The strategy worked while California had no tribal casinos. Once California's tribal compacts opened in the late 1990s and the gaming floors moved closer to LA, Primm collapsed in slow motion.

By 2026, only Primm Valley Resort and Buffalo Bill's are reliably open. Whiskey Pete's has been on/off. Hotels operate at fractional capacity.

02

Buffalo Bill's — the roller coaster

The "Desperado" roller coaster is mounted on the casino exterior. ~80 mph, 200-foot drop. Open intermittently. The casino floor itself is small, dated, and nearly empty most days.

03

Whiskey Pete's

Across the freeway. Western-themed, ghost-town energy on weekdays. The Bonnie & Clyde "death car" used to be a draw — its current location is uncertain.

04

Primm Valley Resort

The newest of the three. Mid-sized casino + outlet mall (Fashion Outlets of Las Vegas) — actually a real shopping draw on the way back.

05

Other stops worth knowing

Tropicana Avenue Casino in Baker — closed. Mad Greek (Baker) — not a casino but the famous gyro stop. Calico Ghost Town — not casino, but a worthwhile detour. The Mojave Desert — the actual reason to take this drive in daylight at least once.

What to do

For a quick stop: gas up at Primm, walk through Buffalo Bill's for the curiosity, get back in the car.

For a real gambling pre-game: skip Primm and just push to Las Vegas. The Strip and downtown are only 40 minutes further.

For a coming-home stop: outlet mall at Primm Valley if you have shopping to do; otherwise just drive home.
