Three Card Poker: The Carnival Game That Plays Faster Than Blackjack
Three Card Poker is the most popular new table game introduced in 30 years. The optimal strategy fits in one sentence. The house edge is moderate but the hand-frequency makes it accessible.
Three Card Poker is a fast carnival game with simple rules. Make an Ante bet. You get 3 cards. Either fold (lose Ante) or "Play" (match Ante). Dealer needs Queen-high or better to "qualify." Optimal strategy: play any hand of Q-6-4 or higher; fold everything else. House edge ~3.4%. Pair Plus side bet has ~7% house edge — skip it.
Three Card Poker was invented by Derek Webb in 1994. It's now in every major casino in the US and most international markets. It's the most successful "carnival game" (a non-traditional table game with simpler rules) of the modern era.
The basic rules
You make an Ante bet (typically $5-25 minimum).
Dealer deals you 3 cards face-down and themselves 3 cards face-down.
You look at your hand and decide:
- Fold: surrender the Ante. Hand is over.
- Play: match the Ante (a second equal bet). Now both Ante and Play bets are at risk.
Dealer turns over their hand. They need at least Queen-high to "qualify."
If dealer doesn't qualify:
- Ante pays 1:1
- Play bet pushes (no win/loss)
If dealer qualifies and you beat them: both Ante and Play pay 1:1.
If dealer qualifies and beats you: both bets lose.
Hand rankings (different from regular poker)
In Three Card Poker, with only 3 cards, the rankings are slightly different:
- Straight Flush
- Three of a Kind
- Straight (yes, ahead of flush)
- Flush
- Pair
- High Card
Note: Straight is ranked higher than Flush in 3-card poker (the math: straights are slightly less common than flushes with only 3 cards).
The Q-6-4 strategy
The optimal strategy for the Play/Fold decision is simple:
Play any hand of Q-6-4 or better. Fold everything else. That means: if your high card is Q or higher, AND your second card is 6 or higher, AND your third card is 4 or higher — Play. If any of those conditions fail, Fold.
This single rule produces optimal play. House edge with this strategy: ~3.37%.
The Ante Bonus
Some Three Card Poker tables pay an "Ante Bonus" when you win with a strong hand:
- Three of a kind: 4:1 bonus
- Straight flush: 5:1 bonus
- Straight: 1:1 bonus
This bonus is paid on the Ante regardless of whether the dealer qualifies. It improves the house edge slightly to ~3.37%.
The Pair Plus side bet — skip it
Pair Plus is an optional side bet that pays based on your hand strength alone (independent of the dealer's hand):
House edge on Pair Plus: ~7.28%. Skip it.
The single decision that distinguishes a smart Three Card Poker player from a poor one is whether they bet Pair Plus. Smart players don't. The casino loves Pair Plus because it's where the easy money is.
How fast is it?
Three Card Poker plays at ~50-60 hands per hour (faster than blackjack's 60-80 because of the simpler decisions and no card-handling).
At $25/hand with 3.37% house edge: $50/hour expected loss. Faster pace, similar hourly cost to 6:5 blackjack.
