Tilman Fertitta: How a Houston Restaurant Operator Built the Largest Independent US Casino Chain

Tilman Fertitta started with a single Houston seafood restaurant. He now owns the Golden Nugget casino chain, the Houston Rockets, hundreds of restaurants, and a $2B+ private empire.

In 60 seconds

Tilman Fertitta is the sole owner of Fertitta Entertainment / Landry's Inc. He started with one Houston seafood restaurant in 1986 and now owns: the Golden Nugget casino chain (Las Vegas, AC, Lake Charles, Biloxi, Laughlin), 600+ restaurants (Bubba Gump, Rainforest Cafe, McCormick & Schmick's, Mastro's Steakhouse, etc.), the Houston Rockets (NBA), and a $2B+ private empire. He's the largest single-owner private gaming operator in the US.

Tilman Fertitta is one of the most aggressive deal-makers in the casino industry. Unlike the publicly-traded Caesars and MGM, his entire empire is privately owned through Fertitta Entertainment. He answers to no shareholders and moves fast on opportunistic acquisitions.

01

From one restaurant to Landry's

Fertitta opened his first restaurant in Houston in 1986 — a single-location seafood spot. By 1995 he had grown the operation to 50 restaurants and took it public as Landry's Restaurants Inc.

Through the 1990s and 2000s, Landry's acquired:

  • Joe's Crab Shack
  • Rainforest Cafe
  • Bubba Gump Shrimp
  • Saltgrass Steakhouse
  • Morton's The Steakhouse
  • McCormick & Schmick's
  • Mastro's Steakhouse
  • Chart House

By 2010 Landry's was the largest restaurant operator in the US.

02

Going private — 2010

Fertitta took Landry's private in 2010 in a $1.4B leveraged buyout, financing it through bonds and bank loans. The company now operates as Fertitta Entertainment / Landry's Inc.

Going private freed Fertitta to make aggressive acquisitions without public-company oversight.

03

The Golden Nugget chain

Fertitta acquired the Golden Nugget Las Vegas in 2005 from Poster Financial Group. Over the next 15 years he expanded to 5 properties:

  • Golden Nugget Las Vegas (2005, downtown Vegas) — the flagship
  • Golden Nugget Atlantic City (2011, formerly Trump Marina) — covered in our Marina District post
  • Golden Nugget Biloxi (2014, Mississippi Gulf Coast)
  • Golden Nugget Lake Charles (2014, Louisiana, the largest)
  • Golden Nugget Laughlin (2015, Nevada)

Combined Golden Nugget gaming revenue: ~$700M annually. The chain operates the Golden Nugget 24K loyalty program (cross-pools across all 5 properties; does not link to any commercial operator network).

04

The Houston Rockets

In 2017 Fertitta bought the Houston Rockets (NBA) from Leslie Alexander for $2.2B — at the time the highest price ever paid for an NBA franchise.

Rockets ownership integrates well with the broader Fertitta empire (the team plays at Toyota Center, near several of Fertitta's restaurants; cross-promotion to gambling sponsorships is leveraged).

05

Online integration

In 2014 Fertitta launched Golden Nugget Online Gaming (GNOG) in New Jersey. The online property became one of the largest online casinos in NJ.

In 2022 Fertitta sold GNOG to DraftKings for $1.7B in stock — a major liquidity event. Fertitta retained the physical Golden Nugget casino brand; DraftKings got the online operation and license to use the Golden Nugget brand online.

06

What makes Fertitta's strategy distinct

Three things differentiate Fertitta from public-company operators:

  1. Speed. Without quarterly earnings pressure, he moves fast on acquisitions. The Golden Nugget AC purchase in 2011 took weeks; Caesars or MGM would have needed months of board approvals.
  1. Restaurant integration. His casinos have multiple Landry's-owned restaurants (Vic & Anthony's, Saltgrass, McCormick & Schmick's). Vertical integration on F&B improves margins.
  1. Local sports cross-promotion. The Rockets ownership creates cross-marketing opportunities at Houston-area Landry's properties — including potential future casino expansion if Texas legalizes.

Fertitta is the operator most positioned to capitalize if Texas legalizes commercial casino gambling. He has the local political relationships, the restaurant infrastructure, the sports franchise, and the private capital to move fast. Watch this space.

What's next

Fertitta has bid for the New York downstate casino license (in partnership with Steve Roth's Vornado). He has publicly advocated for Texas casino legalization. He has expressed interest in Brazil and other emerging gaming markets.
