One Tribe Runs Most of Florida's Casinos. That Explains Everything.
Florida is not a state with many casino operators competing. It is close to a single-operator market, and that shapes the rules, the comps and the poker.
The guitar-shaped hotel in Hollywood, Florida is the most photographed casino building in America that is not in Las Vegas.
It is also a useful landmark for a fact most Florida casino guides skip: the same tribe operates most of the casinos in the state.
Florida's casino market is dominated by the Seminole Tribe, which runs the Hard Rock properties and several others under a state compact. A small number of pari-mutuel and racetrack casinos operate separately with a narrower set of games. That concentration explains the rules you will meet, why one loyalty programme matters far more than any other here, and why Florida became a serious poker destination.

The split matters. The Seminole properties operate under a tribal compact and offer the fuller set of games. The pari-mutuel venues — racetracks and jai-alai frontons that added gaming — work under a different authorisation and a narrower one.
If a Florida casino list presents these as equivalent options, it is not telling you that walking into one rather than the other changes what you can play.

Florida's card-room laws made poker viable at scale well before the state's other gaming questions were settled, and the rooms that resulted are genuinely large.
Hollywood and Tampa both run rooms that stand comparison with anything outside Las Vegas and Atlantic City, and Hollywood hosts a major televised tournament series. For a visitor, that means action most hours rather than a room that opens when enough players turn up — which is the failure mode of poker in most states. Concentration has a practical consequence: in Florida, carding your play into a single programme covers most of the properties you would realistically visit.
That is unusual, and it inverts the normal advice. In a state with six competing operators, splitting play is the mistake. Here the geography does the consolidating for you — the same card follows you from Tampa to Hollywood to Immokalee.
The trap is different. Because one operator dominates, there is little competitive pressure on offers, and the comparison that would tell you whether a promotion is generous does not really exist within the state. If you also play elsewhere, judge Florida offers against what you are given outside Florida, not against the property down the road. The usual Florida guide tells you to visit the Hard Rock in Hollywood because it is the biggest, and stops there.
Biggest is doing very little work in that sentence. Hollywood is the flagship and worth seeing, but for a lot of visitors Tampa is the better trip — comparable scale, generally easier to reach from the west coast and the centre of the state, and less of the resort-destination premium that comes with the Hollywood campus.
And if your interest is poker rather than a resort weekend, the choice between the two is close to a coin flip decided by flights. Neither is a reason to drive past the other.
